Tom Krell, better known as How to Dress Well, is arguably one of the most emotive artists on the scene though he has surprised his audience with a slightly different take on feeling in his fourth album, Care (September 23 via Weird World/Domino). Opening with a self-proclaimed consent-pop song and sex-positivity anthem called Can’t You Tell, the album is characterized by an emotion not common in Krell’s previous work: happiness
Are you listening to Ed Sheeran? What’s going on?. This was my wife, when she walked in on me listening to the new How To Dress Well album last week. It was a fair question. Just a few years ago, Tom Krell emerged on the internet as a murky enigma. But both in music and in public life, he’s gone through a lightening. And now, if anything, we know too much about him. (Depending on how you feel about the lyrics on the new album, Care, we might know way too much about him. More on that later.
Tom Krell, the man behind How To Dress Well, has a new album coming out on September 23rd. Care will be his first full-length since 2014’s What is this Heart? and judging by its first single, Lost Youth, Lost You, he’ll be meandering through the same self-reflexive bedroom R&B that’s brought him such critical acclaim over the last few years.
How to Dress Well's debut album, Love Remains, was released in 2010 on Lefse in the United States and on Tri Angle in Europe and Asia. The album assembled the best of Krell's early EPs and garnered vast critical acclaim. Stereogum recognized How to Dress Well as one of its "40 Best Bands of 2010" Just Once . .

How to Dress Well’s 2010 debut album, Love Remains, was filled with elegiac songs, awash in loops and reverberation. Since then, its music has shifted toward pop with more tightly focused, pointillistic productions, using clearly delineated song forms and putting vocals upfront. I’ve moved more and more, as an artist, toward directness, because I’m just surrounded by the indirectness and amorphousness and impressionistic character of whatever 21st-century life is, Mr. Krell said by phone, from Los Angeles
How to Dress Well's first album since 2012's Total Loss emerges as a sign of optimism in our all-too turbulent times. How to Dress Well, Krell's psychic safety valve for his musical dreamscapes, played like a Ready for the World and '90s neo-soul homage in its infancy. His lo-fi lyrical poem "Ready for the World" flirted with "Love You Down's" melody before manifesting itself into his own composition, murky and poignant without the pretention of a tribute.
