The explosive transformation of Miles Davis’ second great Quintet with Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and Tony Williams (drums) is laid bare on this release. Culled from original state-owned television and radio sources in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, and Sweden, the program spans five northern European festival performances over the course of nine days in October-November 1967. The audio shows consist entirely of previously unreleased or previously only bootlegged material. Focuses on the final chapter in the landmark collaboration between Davis and saxophonist John Coltrane: their last live performances together. Recorded in support of Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz album of all time. 4CD set includes concerts recorded in Paris, Copenhagen and Stockholm from original master tapes.
Miles Davis Quintet: Freedom Jazz Dance: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 5 by Miles Davis Audio CD £1. 9. These discs have been superbly mastered from original radio and TV sources and cover a short period of time during a major 1967 concert tour of Europe. Don't let the significant number of repeats of tracks fool you because this ensemble were all about improvising. Tracks get stretched and taken into very different directions as the group play almost telepathically together.
This second entry, Live in Europe 1969: Bootleg Series, Vol. 2, showcases almost an entirely different band – only saxophonist Wayne Shorter remains. Bassist Dave Holland, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and pianist Chick Corea made up Davis' road band, and other individuals participated in sessions for Filles de Kilimanjaro and In a Silent Way. These fire-breathing performances offer a band at fever pitch hearing and playing what they knew even then was a new chapter in jazz history. The first volume Legacy’s Miles Davis bootleg series offered audio and video evidence of his second great quintet playing the Newport Jazz Festival in Europe in 1967. Acclaim from critics and fans was universal. This second entry, Live in Europe 1969: Bootleg Series, Vol.
Any serious fan of Miles Davis regards the trumpeter's career as would a geologist standing on the lip of the Grand Canyon. And here's another stratum of musical history recently unearthed: three CDs and one stunning DVD of the proto-electric Lost Quintet in concert, test-driving material that would later emerge on the ground-breaking 'Bitches Brew' album the following year . The album 'In a Silent Way' would be released only five days after this gig, but the same, soothing melodies recorded in the studio five months earlier were already turning nervous and agitated on stage.
