The title may refer to a Martin Hannett quote regarding Factory Records - "There's an awful lot of incest that goes on" mused Hannett, "Intrigue and stuff". Originally spread over four twelve-inch volumes here compiled as one complete download. The music goes in many angles and directions. As awkward as it's soothing. It's the future, it's the past.

Intrigue & Stuff Vol. 1. History Always Favours the Winners. James Leyland Kirby is an ambient musician whose records tend toward the romantic and sentimental. Tinkling bells, faraway strings layered with static, soft-pedal piano lines ready to soundtrack footage of rain falling from the window of a slow-moving train: This is Kirby's world, and in Kirby's world the moments are lost, the opportunities missed, and the sky gray, then black, than gray again. I suspect this all sounds heavy-handed, but what makes his music appealing to me is its curious lightness

Intrigue and stuff"-but it may not illuminate much. But Kirby never contents himself with pure, electronic abstractions; his songwriting is grounded in much more conventionally musical ideas. Re-Record Not Fade Away" sounds a little like one of Raymond Scott's blippy children's lullabies, and "Low Entropy" is a fugue for charred music boxes; "Neon Lit Storms" sounds like a Windham Hill MIDI file that's been fed through a bank of Junos, recorded to tape and left in the sun.
