The Scunthorpe-bred and Salford-based, Stephen Fretwell has a hill to climb. A decent-selling debut album earned the 25-year-old his first major-label contract. With his second album due in August, the pressure is definitely on. If Fretwell is nervy, however, he has a bold way of dealing with it. This month’s Four Letter Words EP is packed with clever lyrics, adventurous song structures and outpourings of emotion, but low on radio-friendly melodies. A risky strategy when it comes to sales, but still a safe bet with the adoring crowd that flocked to an imposing church in Central London to hear.
