Growing up near Greenville, Mississippi, Eddie’s adolescent friends included a number of musicians who would one day become fellow Chicago bluesmen such as Little Milton Campbell, Left Hand Frank Craig, Johnny Big Moose Walker and . Muddy hired him on the spot, and Eddie arrived in Chicago as a member of the top band in town. In 1972 he joined Howlin' Wolf as his bandleader. After Burnett's death in 1976, Eddie Shaw took over the band and its residency at the 1815 Club, renamed Eddie's Place. Father of Eddie Vaan Shaw J. .

East-West is the second album by The Butterfield Blues Band, released in 1966 on Elektra Records, EKS 7315 in stereo, EKL 315 in mono. It was recorded at the famed Chess Studios on 2120 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago. It peaked at on the Billboard pop albums chart, but is regarded as highly influential by rock and blues music historians. Like the band's record debut, this album features traditional blues covers and the guitar work of Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop.

Shaw also blew his heart out on Sam's 1968 Delmark encore LP, Black Magic. Shaw won Blues Music Awards in 2013 and 2014, and Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel proclaimed May 3 as Eddie Shaw Day in the city. After his long and illustrious blues career, Eddie Shaw died in Chicago in January 2018 at the age of 80. ~ Bill Dahl.

At the age of 14, he played in a jam session in Greenville, Mississippi, with Ike Turner's band.
