I've made a compilation from the album: The Nightfly (1982) by Donald Fagen.

Continuing in the smooth pop-jazz mode favored on the final Steely Dan records, The Nightfly is lush and shimmering, produced with cinematic flair by Gary Katz; romanticized but never sentimental, the songs are slices of suburbanite soap opera, tales of space-age hopes (the hit ". ) and Cold War fears (the wonderful "The New Frontier," a memoir of.

Listen free to Donald Fagen – The Nightfly (. Green Flower Street and more). The Nightfly is the first solo album by Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen, released by Warner Bros. It is an early example of a fully digital recording in popular music. Although The Nightfly includes a number of production staff and musicians who had played on Steely Dan records, it is Fagen's first release without longtime collaborator Walter Becker.

Donald Fagen's solo debut established him as a more grounded, autobiographical writer away from Steely Dan as it launched a trilogy of albums that wouldn't conclude for decades. The Nightfly, released in October 1982, uses an overnight stint by a DJ at the fictional WJAZ to transport listeners back to a moment in time from Fagen's youth at the turn of the '60s. At the same time, the album's sound is refreshingly contemporary, as bright as Steely Dan's era-concluding Gaucho album had been muddled. Fagen appeared on the album cover as "Lester the Nightfly," based on real-life disc jockeys like Symphony Sid. His long-held passion for jazz played out there too (note that old Sonny Rollins record on the turntable). Albums like that provided a window to the world for the young Fagen during a time of hope and fear.

All in all, it was almost a concept album centred on seedy people of the night; pretentious hipsters with faux-Chinese pastimes, who listen to late-nite musak and dabble in Class-A drugs for the hell of it. The irony is that Steely Dan hadn’t realised that they’d accidentally made an album for those people, not about them. Perhaps then, one of the more fascinating feature of Fagen’s 1982 solo debut The Nightfly is that it sounds more like Gaucho than Gaucho does, but in all its super-cleanliness and focussed virtuosity, it managed to set itself apart for two crucial reasons.

After its 1982 release, The Nightfly-Donald Fagen’s solo debut following his split from Steely Dan partner Walter Becker-racked up seven Grammy Award nominations. Widely acclaimed for its vivid lyricism, the album is a nostalgic homage to Fagen’s youthful memories of the 1950s, with sly references to the era’s jazz and pop culture. The wistful title track imagines a lonely DJ ruminating on isolation. But the tone of the album is set by the hit single . What a Beautiful World), an optimistic look at the future through the innocent eyes of a 1957 scientist.

A portrait of the artist as a young man, The Nightfly is a wonderfully evocative reminiscence of Kennedy-era American life; in the liner notes, Donald Fagen describes the songs as representative of the kinds of fantasies he entertained as an adolescent during the late '50s/early '60s, and he conveys the tenor of the times with some of his most. personal and least obtuse material to date
