With the stakes of the X-Men franchise at an all-time high, the score for X-Men: Days of Future Past helps to convey the urgency and desperation of the mutant plight as Professor Xavier and company fight for survival against the mighty Sentinels. Composed by John Ottman, the tense score sets the backdrop for the X-Men's race against time with its ominous tones and heart-pounding pacing. Most impressive is the way Ottman is able to blend the classical with the futuristic, elegantly allowing the score to travel through time as the film while still maintains a cohesive theme.
Acclaimed composer John Powell marks his first-ever feature collaboration score with Lucasfilm for "Solo: A Star Wars Story. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, the score features a 125-piece orchestra and choir conducted by Gavin Greenaway. Powell composed and produced the score including several new themes written by Powell including "Chewie Theme," "Love Theme," "Ensys Nest Theme," "Gang Theme" and "L3 Theme," as well as adapting the new Han Solo theme and some of the original Star Wars music by John Williams. Most recently his score for Star Wars: The Last Jedi was nominated for an Oscar®.
Did John Powell succeed? Yes he did, and with flying colors. He added his own unique flavor to the score, making it stand out among the Star Wars oeuvre, and I mean that in a good way. Sure, there are some musical callbacks (especially in the aptly-titled "Reminiscence Therapy"), but the new material is plentiful and joyous to listen to (check out "Marauders Arrive"!). The Force is with John Powell. Oh, and I also recommend the film itself. I saw it last night and I loved it. In my honest opinion, it's the best of the recent Star Wars movies. John Williams kicks the album off with one of his best new themes in years, and Powell takes over from there, using it beautifully over the rest of the soundtrack. I've been a longtime fan of his, and was very, very pleased to hear Ron Howard had brought him aboard for this fantastic movie.
