Mine are kind of "dark purple" for one and "transluscent dark prune" for the other... Are they all like this ?

My colors are... LP1-Grayish with a little purple hue, LP2-Lime green. Both are swirled with other colors. They also sound really good!

I'm confused. Is this an official release or a bootleg? If it really is "released by arrangement with BBC Records and Tapes", wouldn't it be official? Thanks in advance.

I second this question. Sure looks official to me.

peel session: invitation of a band by one John Peel (in the role of an acoustic curator) to record what generally amounts to four songs in the course of an eight hour day at the BBC Maida Vale Studions in London. Generally the band/musician does not meet Peel on this occasion. The invitation is due to but one criterion: John Peel's almost infallible taste. There are bands who have arguably made their best recordings not for their official releases but in the course of the so-called Peel Sessions: the Only Ones, Babes in Toyland, Mogwai. Now to the Birthday Party: I have known about the existence of these recordings since 1984. But they were only released in limited forms or unofficially. THIS IS THE REAL THING. You get the chance to listen to a top band presenting top material in top sonic reproduction. This music makes you happy for its existence and sad that the Gun Club never received such an opportunity to present material from their first two LPs under these circumstances. If you like the songs of Hee Haw but are disturbed by the tinny sound, you are bloody right: fantastic material and performances, but the guys in the studio were not yet ready to catch this bunch appropriately at their sonic attack. This makes current Nick Cave products sound like what they are: venerable arts and craft fetishes for the middle-aged. This band on the other hand boasting five musicians who sound like they were only half a step behind understanding what they were doing and thus much further than the rest of the world. To make the full series recorded in the course of barely three years finally available is fantastic: The Birthday Party's relentless and otherworldly stagger ranks them as one of the fiercest bands who still managed to commit their experiences to something that we can still recognize as form, as music. As outstanding as Trout Mask Replica. A double record you may have the guts to listen fully through with special attendance to the mighty bass of Tracy Pew and the always underrated drumming of Phill Calvert.
