Henderson is instantly recognizable (his distinctive tone has not changed much since 1963) and an asset to each of these performances. Also included in the box is a very attractive 40-page booklet that is highlighted by his complete Blue Note discography. This set is particularly recommended to listeners only vaugely aware of Joe Henderson's powerful music.

Joe Henderson (April 24, 1937 – June 30, 2001) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. In a career spanning more than four decades, Henderson played with many of the leading American players of his day and recorded for several prominent labels, including Blue Note. Born in Lima, Ohio, Henderson was one of five sisters and nine brothers. He was encouraged by his parents Dennis and Irene (née Farley) and older brother James T. to study music

Joe Henderson's handful of Blue Note albums from the first half of the '60s rank with the decade's best hard bop recordings. Benefiting from stellar backing units, Henderson ably displayed his tartly sinuous tenor conception on a strong array of originals and cherry-picked covers. For newcomers shy about diving into Henderson's Blue Note Years box set, this sampler will be a perfect way to test the waters.
