Skunkworks is an alternative rock album released in 1996 by Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson. The singer had intended Skunkworks to be the debut album of a band by the same name. However, his label would not issue the record under any name other than Bruce Dickinson. The album moved from Maiden's progressive style to an alternative rock sound similar to bands such as Soundgarden, with lyrics about science and technology. Its name refers to the code name for a military testing program
Displaying a sometimes Rush-like refined prog groove and plenty of his traditional re lyrical themes, Bruce Dickinson deserves high marks for Skunkworks, the ex-Iron Maiden vocalist's fourth solo effort. This 1996 release signals Dickinson's tentative shift toward music generally in tune with (but still somewhat restrained when compared to) his seminal work with Maiden.
Hence, the project became a Bruce Dickinson solo album named Skunkworks. What Does It Sound Like: This album has often been viewed as Dickinson’s attempt at grunge rock, and the enlisting of producer Jack Endino ( Nirvana, Soundgarden ) certainly sounded suspect at the time. Many years later, High On Fire and Toxic Holocaust would both put Endino’s skills to use and emerge with metal cred intact).

With 'Skunkworks', Bruce Dickinson wanted to, understandably, try to get away from Iron Maiden sound. Regarding to the producer Jack Endino, Dickinson wanted this to be a more modern-sounding album. Well, they managed to make it sound modern, plus also one bloody far from the Maiden sound and style. Skunkworks was also the name for the band itself, with Alex Dickson on guitar, Chris Dale on bass and Alessandro Elena on drums. After all, next time around when a Bruce Dickinson solo album came out ('Accident of Birth' in 1997), all fans of Maiden could at last rejoice the return of The Air Raid Siren. Skunkworks the band always had artistical differencies, so no wonder this one got no similar continuation. In its own, 'Skunkworks' is a fine piece of rock music, and not worth solely for the voice heard on it. It still sounds unique, after 15 years.

As for the album itself, Skunkworks is probably one of the most startlingly different albums you're bound to hear. For one, it's not only a departure from Maiden but a departure from the two albums that preceded it. None of the songs on it can be considered metal, and I doubt that even Bruce himself would try to advertise it as such. The album has a ive rock sound to it, and it's funny that I mention the "alternative" part, as this was released the same year that Metallica had dropped a big steaming Load on our ears
