The Sexteto Habanero was a famous Cuban musical group which was founded in 1920. It played an important part in the early history of the son. In 1917 four musicians from Oriente, calling themselves Cuarteto Oriental, recorded four numbers for Columbia Records in Havana.

The Sexteto Habanero was a Cuban son sextet founded in 1920 in Havana. It played an important part in the early history of the genre, contributing to its popularization all around Cuba. In 1927, the band incorporated a cornet player becoming the Septeto Habanero. Although most original members left in the 1930s, the band has continued to perform and record with different line-ups. Their last album was released in 2010 for their 90th anniversary.

This is a compilation LP of various tracks by Sexteto Habanero which were selected for this Golden Collection by Anotonio Contreras who has worked with recording companies in New York, U.S.A., Santurce, Puerto Rico, and in Caracas, Venezuela. There are conflicting catalog numbers regarding this release. The catalog number on the record label is: CDO 1202, and that catalog number is shown on the front of the record jacket as well. However, on the back cover of that record jacket it is release number: CDO 1201. The original release has black labels with gold lettering. and the date 4-20-1965 etched in the dead wax on both sides.

Although not indicated on this release, I'm certain that since these tracks were originally recorded in Cuba during the mid 1960's, that these are all Mono.

Great selection for this collection of original Son Cubano tracks. The Sexteto Habanero were the "FATHERS of the Cuban Son." They were instrumental in the development of Latin music as it is today. They started in Cuba, during the 1920's.
