Quiet Slang, a spin-off act that reduces the Beach Slang lineup to piano, cello, and vocals, leaves those earnest lyrics fully exposed. Their first full-length, Everything Matters But No One Is Listening, boldly courts what Brown called the vulnerability hangover -that anxious feeling you get after showing your true, vulnerable self to people who have the power to vaporize your self-esteem. Beach Slang have always faced accusations of redundancy and cliché. Alex’s veneration of youth and its simple pleasures give his songs a twee undertone.

That version, awash in Replacements guitars and thrashing drums, is a far cry from the cello and piano-laced version on Everything Matters But No One Is Listening-the debut LP of Alex’s latest project, the appropriately monikered Quiet Slang. After a well-received NPR Tiny Desk Concert that saw the anthemic noise of Beach Slang stripped down to just Alex and a guitar, the velvet suit, ruffle shirt-wearing frontman decided to dial back the decibels and give some of his most beloved cuts a makeover. Similarly, Alex’s vocal delivery pretty much flatlines as well, giving a snoozy cloud of sameness to the album. Die-hard fans will love it, but for everyone else, Everything Matters But No One Is Listening probably won’t matter much at all.

He introduced the project on the 2017 EP We Were Babies & We Were Dirtbags, which consisted of two reworked Beach Slang songs and covers of the Replacements and Big Star. Everything Matters But No One Is Listening concentrates on Beach Slang, offering ten previously released songs culled from all four of their prior releases (two 2014 EPs and their first two albums). Stripped of the band's alternately jangly, punky, and grungy guitars and drums, these versions make due with voice, piano, and strings

Consider it an introduction to what Alex calls chamber pop for outsiders, because it simply serves as prelude to Everything Matters But No One Is Listening, a collection of 10 Beach Slang covers that comprises Quiet Slang's debut full-length. Warpaint, and the album itself, closes with the last verse being played in reverse, a choice that helps to further distinguish Beach Slang from Quiet Slang. If the former is concerned with living as presently as possible, the latter feels like a spiral of memory, an attempt to remember the rush through the bleary eyes of a hungover morning after.

Album · 2018 · 10 Songs. Bad Art & Weirdo Ideas (Quiet Slang). 2. Noisy Heaven (Quiet Slang). 3. Future Mixtape For the Art Kids (Quiet Slang). 4. Filthy Luck (Quiet Slang). 5. Dirty Cigarettes (Quiet Slang).

Beach Slang come through with one of the biggest mixed bags of an album you'll hear all year. This album, as you probably know, is a serious of very sweet, charming reinterpretations of early Beach Slang tunes. Which on paper, and from a distance sounds great. Because let me tell you, when this album works, it works great.

The Quiet Slang version is a meandering, sombre track that draws the melancholy out of the lyrics. It is interesting to hear how the accompaniment can so drastically alter the tone of a song. Some tracks don’t deviate as much from their source, such as Too Late to Die Young, but the reworked version still warrants a listen. While the removal of the punk aesthetic is jarring at first, the focus on beautiful melodies allows the listener to focus more intently on the lyrics. Where Alex sings about teenage angst, existentialism and messy relationships, the pretty melody created by piano and cello.

Appropriately dubbed Quiet Slang, these alternate reality versions of Beach Slang’s music have now simultaneously been stripped down and fleshed out in the studio to include piano and cello. The result is a collection of songs that peel away the layers of reverb and distortion to lay bare their starkly honest and emotional cores. LP+ - 180 Gram Clear Colored Lp. Includes Download Code.
