Cuba is also home to a multitude of talented musicians, and among them are pianist Tony Pérez and drummer Ramces Baralt, graduates of the renowned National School of Arts in Havana. A similar versitile approach is taken by Baralt, who’s album Fetecun includes a a strong spiritual element in its homage to Eleggúa, a prominent orisha (deity) from the West African religion of Santería. African musical traditions in Cuban music are quite strong, Baralt says. Other styles covered on his album include blues, jazz, rock and rap. Baralt believes this musical cross-polination is the new face of Cuba.
This is an album that captures your ear with the first listen and continues to tug at your heart (without being overly melodramatic!), bringing you back to listen to it time and again. So, set the table with your best dinnerware, turn the lights way down low, light a candle or three and invite that special someone over for a home-cooked meal, and I’ll venture to bet a bit of desert will happen on it’s own accord, perhaps with a bit of help from the Alex Cuba Band’s debut album, Humo de.
