About Hvis lyset tar oss. The third album released by controversial Black Metal icon Burzum aka Varg Vikernes (government name: Louis Cachet) was recorded at Grieg Hall in September 1992. As with the the other of his first four albums, which were also recorded at Grieg Hall, there was a delay between recording and release; Hvis Lyset Tar Oss (English: If The Light Takes Us) was released two years later, in April 1994. The album is considered a classic amongst the Black Metal community and embodies the minimalistic, dark ambient sound that Vikernes continued to develop on Filosofem.
Hvis lyset tar oss. 08:04. Housed in a 6-panel digipak. Album cover is artwork from Theodor Kittelsen (1857-1914) called Fattigmannen (The Pauper). Song titles in English are: 1. "What Once Was" 2. "If the Light Takes Us" 3. "Into the Castle from the Dream" 4. "Emptiness". Et hvitt lys over skogen" was originally intended to be the fourth track on this album, it was replaced with the song "Tomhet". Some early promo copies of this album (the På svarte troner tape version) included "Et hvitt lys over skogen" instead of "Tomhet".
That influence rests largely on two albums, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and Filosofem; although both are marked by epic peaks and self-indulgent experiments, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss boasts a higher percentage of peaks, including the classic opener "Det Som Engang Va. As such, it's the best encapsulation of Vikernes' fascination with mixing atmosphere into black metal's extreme sonics
Why then, is this album, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, considered THE black metal album" This is a little different. This is by far the most evil sounding album I’ve heard. Bands like (early) Death, Darkthrone and Mayhem don’t come close. From the absolute coldest synth melodies to the relentless guitar riffs, the songs on here pummel you, beat you, and leave you dying in the frozen deserts of Antarctica. He recorded everything in a day’s time, and recorded everything with one try, despite making minor mistakes (except the bass in Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, which took him a couple times), proving that the riffs are quite simple. Simple as they are, they only intend to deliver two things: heavyness and evilness. The beginning of Inn I Slottet Fre Droemmen showcases this, as it is only two different chords repeated over and over. They mesh extremely well with the synth.
