Just a Souvenir is an album by Squarepusher, which was widely released on 27 October 2008. com on 15 September 2008. The album originated in a daydream, in which Tom Jenkinson envisioned a rock band performing a concert against the backdrop of a large, glowing coathanger.
Just a Souvenir could just bridge Jenkinson's longtime appreciation gap. Heck, it's just about the Squarepusher equivalent to Sgt. Pepper's. Souvenir is ostensibly a concept album, complete with a cockamamie yarn Jenkinson has spun about its woozily constructed device: "a daydream about watching a crazy, beautiful rock band play an ultra-gig" centered around a giant neon coat-hanger. And although it's 2004's Ultravisitor, with its ever-present crowd samples, that sounds like a live album, Souvenir leaves distinct impressions of an otherworldly rock spectacle. True to concept, the record as a whole sounds more organic than any Squarepusher release dating back, perhaps, to Music Is Rotted One Note- excepting Souvenir's obvious counterexample in "A Real Woman", whose vocoded robot narrator bemoans its cluelessness in the ways of the human female.
Just A Souvenir opens up with a track titled, Star Time 2 (makes you wonder about its first part) with a fun funky synth/clavichord melody and light beats. From then on Squarepusher moves into improvisational, jazzy, and effected bass slaps over barely comprehensible vocoder blurbs. All of it is truly of psychedelic nature with sparking notes in a kaleidoscope of white, red, green, blue and yellow. On his site, Jenkinson explains that "this album started as a daydream about watching a crazy, beautiful rock band play an ultra-gig.

The album only suffers (and in retrospect, changed my mind about the . ) in that the middle section is a tad to sam-ey, and there are too many pointless interludes interrupting my listening experience. That, however, is a personal complaint, and don’t let it stop you from giving this fascinating album a spin. Choice Cuts: ‘Star Time 2’, ‘Duotone Moonbeam’, ‘Quadrature’.

Squarepusher – Just a Souvenir. on November 27, 2008, 9:15am. Admittedly, this album has enormous shoes to fill. Previous albums like Music is Rotted One Note were a success because the way in which they fused jazz and electronic music was unprecedented. While it’s admirable that Jenkinson isn’t trying to write Go Plastic, Part VIII, the sad truth is that without the acid-fried dream sequence to give the album structure, Just a Souvenir comes off as nothing more than a schizoprhenic 44-minute cut of Weather Report’s Birdland as played by a band of modems
