Cruising with Ruben & the Jets is the fourth studio album by the Mothers of Invention. Released on December 2, 1968, on Bizarre and Verve Records with distribution by MGM Records, it was subsequently remixed by Frank Zappa and reissued independently. As with the band's previous three albums, it is a concept album, influenced by 1950s doo wop and rock and roll.
Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention is a 1985 album by Frank Zappa. The album was originally released in two slightly different versions in the US and Europe. The album's title is a reference to the lobby group, the PMRC, who were campaigning to require record companies to put warning stickers on albums they considered offensive, and to Zappa's former band, the Mothers of Invention.
The Mothers of Invention Absolutely Free (Verve LP, 1967). Absolutely Free includes some of Zappa’s most provocative, lyrics. So out-there was his music, and so idiosyncratic was his sartorial style, that most people assumed Zappa was a fully paid-up member of Los Angeles’ acid-dropping community. Cruising with Ruben & The Jets is unusual in that focuses on just one of Zappa’s inspirations: doo-wop. The first record Zappa bought as a young teenager was Riot in Cell Block by The Robins and doo-wop became a life-long love. By the mid-1980s, Zappa had collected around 7,000 early R&B singles. Cruising with Ruben & The Jets, Zappa’s self-produced fifth album, was his tribute to the style, given a few tweaks but conceived with respect for the tradition.
How Frank Zappa Returned to His Youth on ‘Cruising With Ruben and the Jets’. Even though just two short years had elapsed since Frank Zappa and the Mothers first burst onto the scene with 1966’s watershed Freak Out! album, the prolific bandleader and his charges had already churned out another pair of era-defining LPs filled with dark rock 'n' roll satire (Absolutely Free and We’re Only in It for the Money), and. a daring avant-garde symphonic work (Lumpy Gravy), proving nothing was out of bounds for the maverick musical genius. Certainly not the beloved doo-wop of Zappa’s teen years.

Cruising with Ruben & the Jets. Frank Zappa loved '50s doo wop music. He grew up with it, collected it, and it was the first kind of pop music he wrote ("Memories of El Monte," recorded by the Penguins in 1962). Cruising with Ruben & the Jets, the Mothers of Invention's fourth LP, is a collection of such music, all Zappa originals (some co-written with MOI singer Ray Collins). To the unexperienced, songs like "Cheap Thrills," "Deseri," and "Jelly Roll Gum Drop" may sound like an average doo wop song. A handful of songs from the group's 1966 debut, Freak Out, were rearranged ("How Could I Be Such a Fool" and "Anyway the Wind Blows" give the weirdest results), and old material predating the Mothers was recycled ("Fountain of Love"). Love of My Life" and "You Didn't Try to Call Me" became live staples.
