British post-metallers offer up an immersive second album. By Dean Brown 2017-03-13T10:34:00. Instrumental metal works best when tied to a compelling narrative, exemplified by Pelican, Russian Circles and Red Sparowes, who’ve all used interesting concepts to frame their wordless music. Telepathy have followed suit on Tempest, which illustrates the harrowing journey of a person beset with grief and faced with total isolation after waking from a great flood.
Thought post-metal had nothing left to say? Well, Telepathy just read your mind. elepathy have just returned from their third UK tour of the Tempest album cycle, this time captivating audiences as main support to Icelandic post rockers Sólstafir. These dates wrapped up an incredible year and a half in support of their hugely acclaimed album Tempest, which included performances at the prestigious Roadburn Festival 2017 (where they were heralded as one of the top 10 bands of the festival by Dutch webzine Never Mind the Hype), fan favourite shows at Dunk!

On their previous album 12 Areas, the Colchester band traded in an unusually technical post-metal – instrumental, but with an attention span roughly equivalent to that of a five year old in a supermarket – as such the big riffs and monotony that can mar all but the best post-metal albums was gloriously absent and the album fairly zipped by on a sea. of invention and clever technical arrangements. As I’ve already stated, this record represents significant evolution in the sound and approach for Telepathy; Tempest is a snapshot of that evolution in progress.
