Married to Barbara Siggers, a church pianist, they had five children together: Erma Franklin, Cecil Franklin, Vaughn, Carolyn Franklin and Aretha Franklin. Tragically, he was shot during a robbery attempt at his house in Detroit in June 1979.

Franklin's debut Atlantic album, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, also became commercially successful, later going gold. Franklin scored two more top-ten singles in 1967, including "Baby I Love You" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman". Her rapport with producer Jerry Wexler helped in the creation of the majority of Franklin's peak recordings with Atlantic. Franklin was performing at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas, on June 10, 1979, when her father, C. was shot twice at point-blank range in his Detroit home. After six months at Henry Ford Hospital while still in a coma, C. L. was moved back to his home with 24-hour nursing care  . She is seated between fellow recipients Robert Conquest (left) and Alan Greenspan.
