Mescalito is the first studio album by American country rock singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham, released in 2007 through Lost Highway Records and produced by Marc Ford. The album was released after three self-produced albums by Bingham and his band, the Dead Horses. Some of the tracks in Mescalito, such as "South Side of Heaven" (the main single from the album) and "Long Way From Georgia" were taken from the Dead Horses albums (specifically, from Wishbone Saloon).
Ryan Bingham knows a thing or two about pain. He learned the emotional aspect early in life, when shuttling between small towns and family members in the hardscrabble ranching communities of West Texas and New Mexico - and became wellacquainted with the physical facets during his years on the Southwestern rodeo circuit. That ache is palpable in the grooves of Mescalito, Bingham's Lost Highway debut, but what's even more. Mescalito may be the best, most influential debut album produced by any American musician in the past decade, if not longer. We'll see about how Ryan Bingham's career pans out over the next few years, but if this album is any indication, we may be witnessing the growth of a musician for the ages. Bingham? Might not be far-fetched based on this collection and the two albums that have followed.
Mescalito (CDr, Album, Promo). There’s so little honest music out there that I don’t believe people know how to respond when they are presented with an album like Mescalito, by Ryan Bingham. Following in the footsteps of the greatest and most under appreciated of American artist like Terry Allen, Joe Ely, Patti Griffin, Townes Van Zandt, and sounding like Steve Earle’s father. at twenty five, with a dry, dusty, weathered voice, and a deep rich guitar, bending notes ever so slightly, in perfect pitch with the harmonica, Ryan sings songs from back roads, with.
Newcomer Ryan Bingham is happy to use such geography as his muse, and he makes his major-label debut with Mescalito, a bilingual collection of Americana that often delves into roadhouse country-rock. Where he falters is the album's homogeneity, however, as too many tracks adopt a midtempo pace whose haunting effect wears thin. One can't help but wish for more country-rock grit, but Mescalito still bodes well for his future work.
Album · 2007 · 16 Songs. Texas singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham possesses a voice as parched and pitted as the landscapes his lyrics describe. The songs on his major label debut Mescalito (2007) convey the same sort of grim fatalism and smoldering romance that pervades the novels of Cormac McCarthy. Though classified as a maverick country artist, Bingham seems as much inspired by the blues-rock of the Beggar’s Banquet-era Rolling Stones as by Hank, Willie or Waylon. Such labels don’t really matter, tough. What counts is that the music here has a genuine feel, chronicling America’s wide open spaces from the bottom up.
