Exodus is the ninth studio album by Jamaican reggae band Bob Marley and the Wailers, first released in June 1977 through Island Records following Rastaman Vibration (1976). On 3 December 1976, an assassination attempt was made on Bob Marley's life in which his chest was grazed and his arm was struck with a bullet, but he survived. Following the assassination attempt Marley left Jamaica and was exiled to London where Exodus was recorded.

Bob Marley & The Wailers – Rastaman Vibration. After the long years of cult-hero status, Rastaman Vibration brought Bob Marley and the Wailers chart success at last. Released on 30 April 1976 it became the band’s first, and indeed only album to reach the US Top 10 (apart from the posthumous compilation, Legend) and made similar inroads into the UK chart, where it reached N. 5. And yet for all its commercial appeal and philosophical vigour, Rastaman Vibration was an album that delivered surprisingly few Marley classics and which got squeezed, creatively speaking, between the monumental achievements of Live! (1975) and Exodus (1977).

After the success of 1974's Natty Dread and 1976's Rastaman Vibration, Bob Marley was not only the most successful reggae musician in the world, he was one of the most powerful men in Jamaica. Powerful enough, in fact, that he was shot by gunmen who broke into his home in December 1976, days before he was to play a massive free concert intended to ease tensions days before a contentious election for Jamaican Prime Minister. In the wake of the assassination attempt, Marley and his band left Jamaica and settled in London for two years, where he recorded 1977's Exodus.

Rastaman Vibration is a reggae album by Bob Marley that was released on April 30, 1976.

Exodus, commonly considered as Marley’s opus, was released in 1977, after Marley’s biggest commercial success in America, the mostly unremarkable Rastaman Vibration. Marley finally managed to grow from being the cult hero of hazy-eyed frat boys to being a legitimate star, and easily the most successful and identifiable reggae star at the time. Two days later, Marley played the show injured. If you needed another reason why this man is considered one of the greatest artists of all time, then there’s the music. Exodus features a rejuvenated Marley, exuberant and happy to be alive. If Marley was feeling any gloomy thoughts about his near-death, they sure don’t show through here, and it sure doesn’t seem as if he was trying to confirm his heroic status with pretentiousness. Instead, Exodus features a laid-back, stoned atmosphere that’s simultaneously funky and political.
