The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has announced record results for its 50th anniversary year. It said 700,000 people had seen performances in 2011, more than double the previous year. The Stratford-upon-Avon company said, despite "tough times" it had "bucked the trend", with box office takings rising from £. m to more than £18m. RSC chairman Nigel Hugill said the success had been in large part thanks to West End show Matilda. We're very pleased, because of the fact we opened the new theatre at Stratford during the year, we had the 50th birthday of the company.
Henry IV, Part 2 is the third of four episodes in The Hollow Crown TV series aired in 2012 and produced by Sam Mendes. Richard Eyre directed this adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play and adapted the screenplay. The other three episodes are: Richard II; Henry IV, Part 1; and Henry V. Cast. The Hollow Crown: Henry IV, Part 2. Clips.
The first of Shakespeare's History plays. A story of power and plotting. A monarch ordained by God to lead his people. But he is also a man of very human weakness. A man whose vanity threatens to divide the great houses of England and drag his people into a dynastic civil war that will last 100 years. RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran directs David Tennant in the title role.
The Hollow Crown is an anthology, devised by John Barton in 1961, which presents in dramatic form, speeches, documents, gossip and music, associated with the British monarchy from William the Conqueror up to Queen Victoria. A videotape of a broadcast can be seen at The Paley Center for Media in New York City. According to Ian Richardson "every member of the Royal Shakespeare Company - present, past, or passed-on - has participated in it at one time or another". In 2002 Richardson joined Sir Derek Jacobi, Sir Donald Sinden and Dame Diana Rigg in an international tour visiting Wellington, New Zealand, Sydney, Melbourne, Australia, returning to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon.
The Hollow Crown is absolutely just as great as any of the premium dramas we've seen from HBO, AMC, and Netflix in recent years. With its first four-part season produced by the BBC in 2012 as part of their contribution to the Cultural Olympiad, and a further three parts airing in 2016 to wrap up the Bard’s best-loved history plays, The Hollow Crown is a remarkable production. Set to become the TV adaptations of record, The Hollow Crow truly is a lavishly made all-star Shakespearian epic. It starts with Whishaw recounting two years in the monarch’s life, as his poor choices in trying to settle an argument involving his cousin Henry Bolingbroke (Rory Kinnear) lead to a dark end.
Each play from Richard II to Richard III was allotted two episodes, roughly an hour in length, excepting only Henry VI part 1 which was cut back to a single programme. The critic for The Guardian praised this ‘tremendous project’ and hailed it as ‘ambitiou. xcitin. striking example of the creative use of television’.
