Puha and Pakeha" is a 1960s New Zealand novelty song, written and performed by Rod Derrett. Darkly humorous in nature, it is about Māori people in early New Zealand preparing 'boil-up' meals of puha (a leafy vegetable that grows in the wild) and Pākehā (New Zealanders of European descent). In 2004, a complaint was laid with the Broadcasting Standards Authority that the song was culturally insensitive to Pākehā

Puha & Pakeha catered for our backyard style wedding and we were absolutely blown away by their service. From the outset, Belinda was helpful and flexible with the needs of our guests time spent communicating ideas, and discussing the best menu items for us was greatly appreciated. We received endless compliments on the food and the way you just showed up, set up, served amazing food (seriously fast), and packed down with no fuss at all was truly a blessing.
Rod Derrett was a schoolteacher by day and a nightclub owner and performer at night. Derrett fine-tuned his unique and incisive brand of New Zealand humor during the mid fifties and early sixties in his hometown of Christchurch until he had quite a live following. These were compiled onto the album Rod Derrett Sings – Including Short Back And Sides And Other Favourites in 1967. Derrett and his family left New Zealand in the early seventies and settled in Sydney where he re-launched his career in the clubs of Sydney before returning to teaching. A pioneer of political and social parody in New Zealand, Rod Derrett died on 20th December 2010 in Sydney. He was 80. Show less -. EmbeddableItem EmbeddableItem! type Person.
