Humans is the tenth full-length album by Canadian singer/songwriter Bruce Cockburn. Humans was released in 1980 by True North Records. Humans is universal in its confusion and hard-won willingness to endure without seeking creature comforts or easy answers.

Inner City Front continues the urban toughness that moved to the forefront on Bruce Cockburn's previous release, Humans. Furthermore, like that record, there's an uneasiness that runs throughout, from the jazz-tinged opener, "You Pay Your Money and You Take Your Chance," to the disquieting "Loner," which closes the album. Even a love song like "Wanna Go Walking," one of the most straightforward rockers he's ever recorded, reflects the weight of the outside world.

Inner City Front has a unique appeal even for Bruce Cockburn, an excellent work, emotional and largely melancholy. Originally released in 1981, Bruce Cockburn's "Inner City Front" marked the transition between his 1970s incarnation as a world beat influenced folkie, (best shown on his 1978 masterpiece "Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws") to his darker, angrier 1980s political music (most typified by 1984's superb "Stealing Fire"). As is often the case with an artist in the process of altering his style, "Inner City Front" is somewhat of a jumble. The album's stylistic inconsistency wouldn't matter, of course, if the songwriting was more consistent.

Turn on the tube but there's nothing new The usual panic in red, white and blue "Military advisors" marching in the square Knife-sharp trouser creases slicing air Private armies on suburban lawns Shoulders braced against the tidal dawn All's quiet on the inner city front I don't know why I should but I feel content

The best album by Bruce Cockburn depends on what kind of music you like. Bruce's music from 1969 to 1977 was mainly acoustic, and written about natural subject matter; it was introspective and original. After 1978 and into the 1980s, his music was more electric, urban, and dealt with social issues, not nature. He also followed traditional song structures more rigidly, as he was seeking radio airplay.

Notes

When Bruce was signed to Columbia Records in 1991, a considerable part of his back catalog was re-released in Australia on the Columbia label (I believe that happened in a number of countries). A lot of this material ended up in the bargain bins in music stores over the next few years.
