Mahler, Simon Rattle - Symphony No. 8 album flac
The last part of Mahler's 8th by Simon Rattle and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
In this Eighth with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Rattle turns in what may be his best Mahler recording yet, a vibrant and vivid recording that is arguably the best since Solti's with the Chicago Symphony. Rattle's control of balances, of textures, and, more importantly, of tempos has improved immeasurably since his heavy-of-foot and short-of-breath Second. Most important, however, is that Rattle's earnestness is no longer in question.

The Symphony No. 8 in E-flat major by Gustav Mahler is one of the largest-scale choral works in the classical concert repertoire. Because it requires huge instrumental and vocal forces it is frequently called the "Symphony of a Thousand", although the work is normally presented with far fewer than a thousand performers and the composer did not sanction that name. The work was composed in a single inspired burst, at Maiernigg in southern Austria in the summer of 1906.

Classical concert online: Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8, Symphony of a Thousand performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker and Simon Rattle. Interview Sir Simon Rattle on Mahlers Symphony No. 8 (7 mi. Programme. Even in Gustav Mahler’s time, the Eighth Symphony was called the Symphony of a Thousand. The title may seem sensational, but not inappropriate. For no less than eight vocal soloists, two large mixed choirs, a boys’ choir, a large symphony orchestra, a separate brass ensemble and an organ are required for the performance. But its monumental grandness is not only due to its instrumental and vocal forces, but equally because of its global textual basis.
Rattle always maintained that his Mahler cycle wouldn't necessarily be complete. And the Eighth was the problem-child that he couldn't quite get to grips with. Now the cycle is complete and maybe those problems still show through despite, I'm sure, a lot of homework on his part. The glory and grandure of Mahler's vision is lost, replaced with an inchoate set of Rattle's personal projects. For depth, glory and cogency try the glowing version conducted by that truly great Mahlerian: Wyn Morris.
