Barnes recorded three albums for Mercury Records. The latter two recordings contained Barnes' unique orchestrations with 10 guitars, also known as his "guitar choir," which utilized the guitars as a horn section. They were two in a series of Mercury albums that used an early 1960's state-of-the-art recording technique known as "Perfect Presence Sound. His albums with his guitar duo partner Carl Kress received national acclaim in the early 1960s. After the 1965 death of Kress, Barnes formed another guitar duo with Bucky Pizzarelli

George Warren Barnes (July 17, 1921 – September 5, 1977) was an American swing jazz guitarist who played the first electric guitar in 1931. He made the first commercial recording of an electric guitar on March 1, 1938, in sessions with Big Bill Broonzy. Barnes was born in South Chicago Heights, Illinois in 1921. George Barnes was a major influence of Les Paul, Charlie Christian, Merle Travis, Herb Ellis and Chet Atkins, so they all said. One man's word on acoustic guitars, their makers and their players. George Barnes – the first electric guitarist. George Barnes the best guitarist you (thought) you never heard. He was 56. That same year I discovered a double-album at the local Public Library called The Guitar Album, featuring a list of names I had never heard of. It turned out to be from a 1971 concert of Jazz guitarists at Town Hall in New York City. Being a rock fan, there was very little of interest on it for me. Then, I heard the duets of George Barnes and Bucky Pizzarelli. I was enthralled with the musicality of the tunes, the breathtaking licks, the slower passages of glistening, liquid tone.
