Soundtracks For The Blind.

Soundtracks for the Blind is the tenth studio album by Swans, and the last released until 2010's My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky. It was released as a double CD in 1996, through Young God Records. A reissue of the album was released on July 20, 2018, marking the first time Soundtracks for the Blind was released on vinyl.

Soundtracks for the blind is the final studio album from the legendary band. Throughout their fifteen-year history, Swans have unfailingly presented intense, utterly singular & peerless music. Soundtracks for the blind, their new double-cd set, is the final studio album. Soundtracks for the blind totally delivers, in full circle fashion, the promise nascent in '94's great annihilator album. Soundtracks for the Blind yields total sonic immersion: your only option is to succumb. The Swans always wrote every song like it was going to be their last.

Soundtracks for the Blind. Released October 22, 1996. Soundtracks for the Blind Tracklist. 1. Red Velvet Corridor Lyrics. Soundtracks for the Blind incorporates obscure spoken interludes between some songs, which mostly describe the disability of the speaker or someone that the speaker is describing. Across these 26 tracks is what is considered by many to be the best piece ever released by Swans, and an important contribution to modern music as a whole. Soundtracks for the Blind Q&A.

I felt relaxed throughout te massive chaos of noise that was this album. It feels post apocalyptic and void of light, much as the name could explain. I found this to be blood pumping, psychedelic, and unbelievable.

Gira and Jarboe, ca. 1997. In other words, the relatively static lineup that was inaugurated in 2010 has been dissolved, and during such times of temporary artistic instability, the impulse toward oeuvre reflection seems hard to avoid

Album · 1995 · 26 Songs. Noise-rock behemoths Swans’ final record of the 20th century-they would go dark for the next 14 years-broke sharply with the rest of their ’90s output, in part because it’s essentially a Michael Gira solo project. Far from its pummeling predecessors, this ambitious double album is a fever dream of electronic sketches interwoven with found sounds and Dictaphone remnants. Bits of full-band jams and cacophonous live scraps peek through the fog, only to be swallowed up by the ambient swirl.

Soundtracks For The Blind is a music studio album recording by SWANS (Post Rock/Math rock/Progressive Rock) released in 1996 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. The main difference between this album and earlier Swans releases is that up to this point their music was vocal/lyrics oriented; here they make lots of room for instrumental excursions. This is a long album and the track times range from 1 1/2 minutes to almost 16. "I Was A Prisoner In Your Skull" sounds like what GYBE would between 1997-2000.

Scalpers already charge for 3 or 4 times the original price, disgusting!
Could anyone tell me what the "Die Tür Ist Zu" version of this is? I found a vinyl version of that in a shop but never bought it since I didn't know about it
Soundtracks For The Blind. I am a big fan of Swans, but didn't get in until To Be Kind came out. I worked through their discography and like everything. For some reason I was slightly underwhelmed with this one when I first heard it. I loved a few of the tracks, but felt unsure about it as an album. After giving it some time, it grew on me. It grew on me a lot. After years of listening to it, I now consider it one of their best, if not THE best. I recently upgraded to the vinyl and wow, it sounds tremendous!
This is the best sounding vinyl I've ever heard. Absolutely no surface noise and the remastering is just beautiful. The packaging is also stellar and incredibly sturdy. I would definitely recommend picking this up before they're all gone.
Vinyl sounds great and the packaging is fantastic. For some reason, my copy (which I bought at a record store) didn't come with the lyric sheet. Oh well, it's well worth the purchase regardless...
The greatest record ever. Period. This one kicked me in the gut from the first time I heard it. 2.5 hours and not a wasted moment. I used to think "Volcano" was a bit awkwardly situated, but it works for me now. The power and emotion in this album is astounding. The ultimate "collage" album. Unmissable.
if i recall correctly wasn't there gonna be a gatefold LP edition?

The original recording of this album is digital. I bought this vinyl reissue just because this album is pure gold and I wanted it in my collection. I didn't expect a big revelation in sound qualilty compared to the original CD, which always sounded good for my taste. Nevertheless, when listening to the vibraphone and the waves of noisy guitars on "Helpless child" and "The sound" I felt totally submerged in the beauty and strength of the sound like never before. They did a great job with the remastering.
Fantastic release, everything I wished for in a vinyl release of this behemoth of an album. Just one complaint, though, is the fact that the download code is a sticker glued on the 4th disc sleeve.
Great pressing of a great album. No issues with sound whatsoever, and the packaging is stellar - quite a sturdy box, and each record has both a normal sleeve and an interior one. Poster is pretty cool, and the lyric insert is actually great. Pick it up if you can.
Anyone have any proof that the new CDs and FLACs are the remaster? I heard a rumor that only the vinyl was the remaster and the rest were reissues. Much appreciated!
I don’t have a CD copy to compare this to, but I do have the FLAC files of a CD, and this long overdue vinyl reissue is everything it could’ve been and more. I was worried with the lore surrounding the masters, but all my fears have been squashed. Big when it needs to be, silent at the quiet parts. Everything represented flawlessly. Get this now before it’s another $400 box set you’ll never have the scratch to throw at.
Now THIS is how to put out vinyl that people have been waiting patiently for for years! It's a thing of beauty and sounds terrific. I only hope The Beta Band can achieve the same result with their upcoming Three EP's release.
Anybody else have left channel buzzing on YRP and Fan's Lament?
Yes, I noticed the same thing on those tracks as well. Everything else sounds pretty stellar though.
Yes mine too have some buzzing sounds/Distorted sounds going on on the 2 mentioned songs as well.
the original release cost was just below $90,just letting you know.
Not true. The original release cost IS just below USD 70 and it's still available at source:https://younggodrecords.com/collections/frontpage/products/soundtracks-2018
Not sure I get your point. This IS the original release (on LP). It’s jointly released by YGR and Mute. Also, it’s much cheaper than $90.
Not to mention it's still available at the website and plenty of other major retailers at the original price.
Fantastic pressing and remaster with the perfect housing. The live tracks sound much cleaner while still having that gritty edge.
Preordered the Mute set through Boomkat, because of cheaper shipping... it was shipped August 2, I can't wait
I feel your disappointment too - I preordered from Norman Records in the UK (the US shipping from Young God records was crazily expensive and the added customs and handling fees would've meant doubling the price) - still waiting and I know deep down it'll be worth it!
There's a limited box set pre-order available on Young God now... $80. Gatefold to come later... From Young God:"Swans Soundtracks for the Blind, their last studio album released in 1996 prior to their 2010 reformation, will be released for the first time on vinyl by Young God Records on July 20th 2018. Much requested by Swans fans, the vinyl package will consist of four LPs in jackets enclosed in a box with a poster, insert and download card. The box set will be a limited edition of 4,000 copies worldwide and once sold out will be followed later in 2018 by a gatefold LP version. The album will also be reissued on CD featuring a repackage of the original digipak for the 1996 Atavistic release plus a bonus disc of the contemporaneous Die Tür Ist Zu EP (a German language version of some of the material from Soundtracks that also includes unique material) recently released for the first time on vinyl in the USA for Record Store Day 2018. Outside of the USA Die Tür Ist Zu EP will be released as a limited edition companion piece double vinyl set, also on 20th July."
any idea on what differences would there be between the boxset and gatefold edition?
Gira just announced a few days ago that it will be finally released in early 2018 as a 4xLP set.
This is from an email sent by Young God Records on Monday:Soundtracks for the Blind is finished and is in the pipeline. It's taken forever to figure out the packaging and to master it properly. It will be available as a 4xVinyl set, as well as a 3xCD (the 3rd CD is the long out of print Die Tur Ist Zu). Release for Soundtracks will be in May. Die Tur Ist Zu will also be available soon as a limited 3 sided vinyl release, the 4th side being an etched graphic. It will be available for Record Store Day, April 21st in North America (Mute to release at a later date). Later in the year, we'll also be putting together a live Swans album of material from this recent, now past formidable line up. We did a great deal of live recordings. I'm still sifting through it...And more Swans catalog rereleases of course along the way...
anyone wanna sell this to me? thank you in advance
Swans just announced a reissue for this, hopefully an LP tho it'd most likely be a 3xLP set
It'd have to be a 4xLP set, the sheer length would demand it
Bought this at one of their recent shows for $15
Nonpareil! This is the album that makes in comparison Merzbow's harshness sound silly and GY!BE's lyricism fake. Notwithstanding the band's comeback (which is rather below the high expectations), 'Helpless Child' will forever be in my heart their unsurpassed swan song, so powerful, evocative and ecstatic, almost unbearable.
Strange how tastes can vary; I think To Be Kind is their best album and their swan song is the last track on that album as the album that followed was pretty weak. Having said that Helpless Child is a bloody amazing song.
Alright, here's a theory: I just bought my copy of 'The Glowing Man' and I noticed that it is referenced as YG58, which I found a bit weird considering that 'To Be Kind' was YG46. Doing a bit of research, I have found out that these have been the latest releases of Young God Records:YG46 - To Be KindYG47 - Swans EP reissueYG48 - Filth reissueYG49 - White Light from the Mouth of InfinityYG50 - White Light from the Mouth of InfinityYG51 - Love of LifeYG52 - Love of LifeYG53 - ?YG54 - ?YG55 - ?YG56 - ?YG57 - ?YG58 - The Glowing ManFor some reason, White Light and Love of Life come in two versions (one, I reckon, being due to the fact that they also came out as part of the box set). However, 5 releases (YG53-57) may have already been planned and not yet announced. It looks like there are only 5 Swans LPs that are either unavailable on vinyl or weren't re-pressed yet. The are: Cop, Greed, Holy Money, Children of God, The Great Annihilator.Soundtracks for the Blind, as we all know (sigh...) has never come out on vinyl and, frankly, I doubt that it may be one of those five releases.I know this theory may be a bit bonkers, but it'd be good to know what you people think!
The reissue of The Great Annihilator is YG59. So these numbers are not reserved for this release.
Funny duck
this album is so f*cking awesome. remember when I bought it many years ago, until then I had only listened to their early classics. this album is just as the image on the booklet: A big pink cloud on a dark sky. it has the long-epic noisy tracks, tape recorded conversations, beautiful instrumental sections ala-MBV, live tracks..Despite this diversity the tracks flow evenly into an emotional crescendo ....This is a masterpiece of beauty and horror . Thanks Swans.
Very well put, cristianHa. I can not agree more. Let's hopefully wait for the vinyl version.
Relax people! After a concert a couple of days ago, Michael Gira told me we might expect an official vinyl release of Soundtracks for the Blind. Not soon but in two or three years max. Let's just hope they go through with it.
so sassy,
no point, Gira said he destroyed all the original source material so it would just be a CD to vinyl transfer
what's the point? this seems to have been recorded digitally and the CDs sound awesome.
Well... That didn't happen, but they're reissuing an old EP i believe for record store day. Maybe this reissue is alluding to a full mass pressing of Soundtracks for the Blind (CROSSED FINGERS)
went to a swans concert yesterday and the girl running the merch table said they hope to have it ready by rsd this year
Please someone release this on vinyl!
I'm pretty sure it would have to be on three records if they did that, and all the sides except the last one would be pretty cramped. (All these times are estimated based on what iTunes lists the combined track times as)Side A - Tracks 1-3 (26 minutes)Side B - Tracks 4-8 (24 minutes)Side C - Tracks 9-13 (26 minutes)Side D - Tracks 14-18 (27 minutes)Side E - Tracks 19-22 (24 minutes)Side F - Tracks 23-26 (18 minutes)
Title is wrong, should be soundtracks instead of soundtrack.
A notable fan favourite, however too massive for me to swallow.A humongous double album, and far heavier than it looks. Fans and critics adore it, and interestingly enough, the brilliance was a complete mistake. Soundtracks... is a complation of sound experiments, old recordings, etc. by bandleader Michael Gira that date back as far as before the Swans was formed. Everything was mastered from old casette tapes recorded on crude dictaphones, floppy disks, CD-R's, and so on. Gira described the very long process as "extremely painstaking" and also that it nearly broke him into a nervous breakdown. After Soundtracks was released, Gira took all of his old recordings, and threw them away on a nearby dump, therefor destroying them forever. My personal opinnion? A mixed bag. It contains some of the greatest tracks ever recorded, especially "Helpless Child" and "The Final Sac", which are enough to buy the album for alone. However, the rest comes off as really bland at times. "I Was A Prisoner In Yr. Skull" is beautifully dark and strange, though.Note: Every Swans fan except mabye fifteen people will disagree with me. Listen for yourself.
