Ah yes. This is some fresh stuff. The LP which came out before this was great, but this is even better. This release is fleshed out with six (!) extra tunes and they are all well worth it. Here is Calibre in top form creating funky, minimal and deep drum and bass. In my opinion he is by far the most talented producer in the Drum N' Bass scene. This album is pure class. Hearing this for the first time was nearly as exciting as when I first bought my copy of Bukem's classic "Logical Progression" LP. What makes Calibre's music stand out from other D&B artists is the stunning production.

Second Son elevated Calibre to DnB superstar status. Calibre's mighty wind has blown through the drum 'n' bass scene ever since his first tentative forays into production in 1998. As a trained musician and student of the genre, he quickly developed a unique sound that was warm, orchestral and hypnotic. Attracting the attention of tastemakers like Fabio, the Belfast-born producer and DJ was encouraged to work harder and faster on this liquid funk, resulting in what would become his signature sound.

why is track D: Second Sun cut short like that at the end instead of the o.g. fade-out????? ugh, shame

'Bit dissapointed that 'Consulate Charm' wasn't included on the CD release, still by far the best album of '05 though, which is spectacular considering that 'Calyx - No Turning Back' 'Guerilla Warfare' 'MDZ.05' & 'Rare Grooves' were all released in the same year!

Why oh why oh why did I sell this?!! One of my worst decisions! A fantastic album with some of Calibre's best work. Every tune is just sublime. Maybe one day it will be re-pressed? So I can not make the mistake again!

It went to a good home :-) I'd never sell it so appreciate the agony over that decision. Also, R.I.P Diane, you contributed heavily in making bullets in to an amazing track, you will be sorely missed in the dnb scene and to all that knew you.
Arcanefist
an amazing album. 'bullets' the first song will grab you. Then moves on to more dubby smooth rollers, great work.

Ah yes. This is some fresh stuff. The LP which came out before this was great, but this is even better. This release is fleshed out with six (!) extra tunes and they are all well worth it. Here is Calibre in top form creating funky, minimal and deep drum and bass. But not just drum and bass! 'Don't Watch This' and 'These Few' are deep house tracks which should fit easily in a Moodymann or Theo Parrish set. Or even better, play it out at your local jungle night! As we all know, the scene could use some variety in DJ sets. Another offbeat track is 'Drinnahilly', a chilled downtempo track which, together with the excellent 'Timeout', slows the pace for the remainder of the album. The rest is, well.. funky and sexy drum and bass we all know and love with excellent contributions from established vocalists. Of the non-vinyl drum and bass tracks I think 'Breathing Man' is the best. Big drums and overall an impeccable, dubby production. 'Blink Of An Eye' is maybe the most interesting track of the bunch and a little something which sounds quite innovative to me. My favorite track is probably 'Is It U'. Simple, emotive and highly effective.I'm thinking this is the best jungle album of 2005, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in thinking this.

Calibre is bordering on genius as a producer on the evidence of "Second Sun". He shows he is gifted with an amazing imagination and also a proper knowledge of musicality. If you're looking for an album full of hard, in-yer-face, techy ballistics then forget this album. This is deep, intelligent D&B with strong Dub, Reggae, Funk, Jazz and Soul influences. The basslines are rooted in Dub and are buried deep and low but they are all the better for that - these are fantastic basslines. Also there's less emphasis on the beats. They're minimal on nearly every track and just keep the tunes rolling along nicely. This album is not cheesy though, the moods and emotion captured here are sombre and melancholy like on the opening tune "Bullets". The main highlight for me is the breathtaking title track which is almost symphonic with it's orchestral strings and some lovely ambient like atmospherics. It's majestic, truly a thing of beauty and I would honestly suggest buying this album for that track alone. "Kiya" is also an amazing track. Featuring some great vocal hooks from Crow and brooding strings which combine with an almost cinematic string sweep. The melody on this is also very clever. It sounds off-kilter at first but after a closer listen it is infact perfectly executed. The bassline is also brilliant. "Is It U" and "Consulate Charm" are also amazing dub-tinged, soulful beauties. I've found that this is a great album for listening to late at night when you want to relax with a good smoke, it's like a chillout album believe it or not. The whole album is a rich, intoxicating listening experience and I would highly recommend this to anyone with a liking for quality music. Even if you're not a big fan of D&B once you've listened to this you must surely agree that Calibre is a genuine talent. Quality all the way, this is a work of Art!

Top review there for this 1st Class album indeed.. Always enjoyed listening and mixing these Calibre (now trademark) rollers which all have their own feel! My favourites are the deep, emotional 'Got a Thing' and 'Go Back To Go Forward' which is Calibre goin' deep, dark & dubby. All fantastic tracks so long live this genius/Buy it you can't miss this.5/5

I just listened the entire album and I completely agree with this review. It describes the album the way it is. A high quality work of art in d+b music, one of my favorites so far.
