Symphony No. 9 by Gustav Mahler was written between 1908 and 1909, and was the last symphony that he completed. It is actually his tenth symphonic work, as Mahler gave no ordinal number to his symphonic song-cycle Das Lied von der Erde. A typical performance takes about 75 to 90 minutes. Though the work is often described as being in the key of D major, the tonal scheme of the symphony as a whole is progressive. While the opening movement is in D major, the finale is in D♭ major.
Mahler called it a "symphony" even if "Das Lied von der Erde" is routinely excluded from most Mahler symphony "box sets". In any case, despite the greatness of Mahler's nine named symphonies, the flaw I see in them (as with the Tchaikovsky symphonies) is that Mahler sometimes has a hard time getting from point A to point B. The transitions can seem a bit flabby and long-winded despite the awesome power of the general concept. 2 by Gustav Mahler, known as the Resurrection Symphony, was written between 1888 and 1894, and first performed in 1895. This symphony was one of Mahler's most popular and successful works during his lifetime. It was his first major work that established his lifelong view of the beauty of afterlife and resurrection. In this large work, the composer further developed the creativity of "sound of the distance" and creating a "world of its own", aspects already seen in his First Symphony
Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde came after a difficult period in his life when his daughter died from a childhood disease, he was forced out of his opera conducting position by anti-Semitism, and he was diagnosed with a serious congenital heart condition. This is well-captured by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in live performances from the Herkulesssaal in Munich, and conductor Sir Simon Rattle, who keeps the dynamics moderate and the instrumental details clear.

The poems that in 1908 inspired Mahler to Das Lied von der Erde had been printed a year earlier in Hans Bethge's Die chinesische Flöte ('The Chinese Flute'). But they had already before that travelled huge distances in both time and space. During their long-standing collaboration, the SSO and Lan Shui have been tireless in promoting Chinese and Asian composers, an undertaking that on disc has born fruit in recordings of works by Zhou Long, Chen Yi and Bright Sheng. 2 in C Minor "Resurrection": V.
