The Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor, Op. 38, entitled "Sonate für Klavier und Violoncello", was written by Johannes Brahms in 1862-65. Brahms composed the first two movements during the summer of 1862, as well as an Adagio which was later deleted. The final movement was composed in 1865.
Cello Sonata N. O. 8 Johannes Brahms. Haydn's String Quartets (Opus 76). . Johann Kuhnau: Uns ist ein Kind geboren. Cello Sonata N. (principal) - composer Brahms, Johannes SHEET MUSIC.
Beethoven was the first great composer of cello sonatas, and he remained really the only one until Brahms wrote two at the end of the last century, and then in our own time Martinu wrote three. Aside from a few individual works by other composers (Grieg, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich, Barber, and Britten), that about sums up the entire repertoire for this particular combination. The sonata for cello and piano is approached before the sonata for violin and is then continued after the closure of the violin sonata cycle. Sonata in A major n., op. 69, dedicated to baron Gleichenstein and composed in 1808, is the most popular and at the same time the most loved cello sonata of the composer’s work. This is explainable through the diversity of the thematic material and the improvisational character of the themes.
In the Brahms, Piatigorsky and Rubinstein are soul mates in style, rhythmic freedom, and spontaneous expressiveness, from austere introspection, pensive wistfulness, and serene resignation to ardor, passion, and unbridled impetuosity. With Ivor Newton, three Weber pieces, transcribed by Piatigorsky from the violin sonatas, are charming and brilliantly effective. 2. Sonata for cello & piano No. 4 in C major, Op. 102/1: 3. Adagio - Tempo d' Andante 4. Allegro vivace. 3. 5 in D major, Op. 102/2: 1. Allegro con brio. 4. 102/2: 2. Adagio con molto sentimento d' affetto. 5. 102/2: 3. Allegro - Allegro fugato. 6. 38: 1. Allegro non troppo. 7. 38: 2. Allegro quasi menuetto.
