Without a Song: The 9/11 Concert. Without a Song: The 9/11 Concert is a 2005 live album by jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, recorded in Boston on September 15, 2001.
Without a Song is a live recording of a Boston performance on September 15, 2001-four short days after the date referred to in the title-and it features Rollins with his veteran group of trombonist Clifton Anderson, pianist Stephen Scott, electric bassist Bob Cranshaw, drummer Perry Wilson, and less longstanding percussionist Kimati Dinizulu. These players are not so much restrained and tasteful as they are blandly robotic. This band's group sound is no more, and no less, than what Rollins desires. And on the five long tracks on Without a Song, Rollins allots everyone way too much solo time. This means many long minutes of trombone improvisation from Anderson, whose solo on "Without a Song" very characteristically seems more a pleasant series of notes allowed by the song's chords than a musical statement with anything to say.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Sonny Rollins was in his home, located six blocks from the World Trade Center. His evacuation the next day happened to be filmed by CNN. Despite the travel restrictions, Rollins and his band managed to make their September 15 gig at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston. Rollins was still shook up and unsure whether or not he should perform, but his stalwart wife Lucille convinced him to go on. The result is this beautiful recording, five long songs full of energy and hope.

The arrival of a new Rollins album always arouses excitement, but it’s a while since the music lived up to the billing. As long as the sax legend confines himself to a polite but impersonal working band, built around the trombonist Clifton Anderson and the bassist Bob Cranshaw, it’s difficult to see anything changing. This live set at the Berklee Performance Center took place days after the attack on the Twin Towers, a short stroll from Rollins’s apartment. Otherwise, it’s pretty much business as usual, the rhythm section ticking along on epic versions of Where or When and Without a Song, but.
