About Barnstorm album. Album Barnstorm (1972). Labels ABC/Dunhill Records, ABC Records, Dunhill.

Joe Walsh and his band Barnstorm plays The Bomber, from ABC's "In Concert", 1972.

Barnstorm is the debut studio solo album by the American singer-songwriter and t Joe Walsh, following his departure from the James Gang. The album was released in October 1972 on the labels ABC and Dunhill. The core band on this album – Walsh, bassist Kenny Passarelli and mentalist Joe Vitale – was also named Barnstorm. It was the first album to be recorded at Caribou Ranch in Colorado.

With this album, Walsh and Barnstorm moved away from the hard rock sound of the James Gang and explored a more folk-based, acoustic sound, influenced by such artists as James Taylor and Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Nonetheless, the album became a cult classic among Walsh fans. It was later reissued in the . on CD by Hip-O Select/Geffen Records in January 2006.

Turn to Stone (Joe Walsh and Barnstorm song). The song was originally released on the album Barnstorm. Walsh later covered the song for his solo album So What, and released it as a single. The single peaked at on the US Billboard chart.

Barnstorm is an excellent album recorded when Joe was in his prime. I discovered this record while at college in England, where he and the James Gang had a cult following. Most of my college friends were shocked when he joined the Eagles. Joe wrote some great music. I would hazard to say that this album is least known to the public as a Joe Walsh or James Gang effort. The semi hit- "Turn to Stone" originated here and is a Joe classic, but has been on many compilations since. If I was to sum up the rest of 'Barnstorm', I would say that is it is Joe Walsh locked up in a cabin just like the cover, with some mellow partying materials and a case of wine. It is a beautiful bit of techno and over dubbed fat mellow synth guitars. It is introspective and haunting.

In 1981 Walsh and former Barnstorm bandmate, Joe Vitale, went to work on old friend John Entwistle's fifth solo album Too Late the Hero, whenever they were free to work on it. The album turned out to become John Entwistle's best-charting solo album, with hit singles "Talk Dirty" and "Too Late the Hero". The Barnstorm group was put together shortly after Walsh left the James Gang. The songs were recorded in Nederland, CO with the help of bassist Kenny Passarelli and drummer Joe Vitale, the latter had played with Walsh in 60s garage band the Measles. The trio recorded an album that rocks hard at times but also has a strong roots/country flavor. It’s a unique disc in Walsh’s varied discography, as he would never record anything like Barnstorm again. Turn To Stone, the hardest rocker on the album, holds up pretty well and is similar to something the James Gang might have recorded in 1970. Walsh would revisit this excellent track on 75’s So What but I feel the version heard here sounds best.
