Trouvere Medieval Minstrels. Trouvère recreate the music of the Middle Ages, with a special interest in the 12th and 13th centuries . Busy working at the moment on twelfth-century material, and this is one of my new favourites: Jubilemus Salvatori, by Adam de St Victor, who was active in the first half of the twelfth century. 76. 13. We visited Guédelon yesterday - it's the castle being made as authentically as possible, a 25-year project! Really fascinating, a great site and well worth a visit (or repeat visits to see it all coming along). We trooped out a few thirteenth-century tunes in the painted antechamber to the Great Hall.
Minstrels performed songs which told stories of distant places or of existing or imaginary historical events. Although minstrels created their own tales, often they would memorize and embellish the works of others. Frequently they were retained by royalty and high society. As the courts became more sophisticated, minstrels were eventually replaced at court by the troubadours, and many became wandering minstrels, performing in the streets; a decline in their popularity began in the late 15th century. Late in the 13th century, the term minstrel began to be used to designate a performer who amused his lord with music and song. Following a series of invasions, wars, conquests, et. two categories of composers developed. Poets like Chaucer and John Gower appeared in one category, wherein music was not a part.
