John Mars can be a hard pill to swallow. He is unquestionably great on the piano, at times creating beautiful compositions that bring to mind vintage Tori Amos. But his thin voice reveals a cruel, angry man who sings about drugs, rape, and death with the sort of gallows humor one would expect from the Mentors. There is definitely a bright talent hidden behind the joke lyrics; listeners with thick skin about taboo subject matter may find this to be a great album. But be warned: Mars aims to offend, and does a good job of it.
