Welcome to Maldon Golf Club
Introduction
Maldon Golf Club is one of the oldest and finest clubs in Essex. We welcome golfers of all abilities, including junior players.
During the evening of Tuesday 24th November 1891, a company of twenty local dignitaries sat at a large table in the comfortable surroundings of the King's Head Commercial Hotel in Maldon High Street. Chairing this important meeting was 70-year old clergyman, the Rev. Edward Russell Horwood, MA, for over half a century the vicar of nearby All Saints Church. By his side was the unmistakable figure of Sir Claude Champion de Crespigny, JP, of Champion Lodge, Great Totham, described as "one of the pluckiest and hardest men of his time".
Also present at that momentous autumn rendezvous were Alfred Lomas, farmer and owner of Langford Hall, Christopher William Parker, MA, JP, DL, of Faulkbourne Hall, Witham, and at least three local businessmen - Mr. Arthur Barritt, hay and straw merchant, Thomas Laurance Eve, corn merchant, and Thomas Elsey Bland, JP, wine and spirit merchant and manager of the Maldon Crystal Salt Company.
Although they were from very different walks of life, these influential men has a common interest, all of them had a passion for an up and coming pastime - the captivating game of Golf. As an organised pursuit, the sport was in its infancy and, although an association had been formed in the country as early as 1766, (the Royal Blackheath), the sun would set on Victorian Britain before Golf really teed off.
Between the Chelmer/Blackwater Navigation and the tidal reaches of the River Chelmer sits a triangle of low-lying ground, just 50 acres of peace and tranquility. Wildlife abounds, particularly birds, and there are views to charm the eye in all directions.
Today the club is a friendly and a delightful place to play, with great facilities.
